Hello, it’s Jill Hills here.
If you’ve been following my work for any length of time, you probably noticed I briefly stepped away from The Circle City News to try something new. I launched my own blog, Feathers and Feet, with a lot of excitement and even more optimism. I wanted a space that was entirely mine, where I could explore the quirky, niche topics I’ve always loved writing about.
But here’s the honest truth: running your own website is hard.
I didn’t have a background in web design, site management, SEO, hosting issues, or any of the behind-the-scenes work that goes into keeping a site alive and visible. Writing is one thing — doing everything is another. Between trying to manage the technical side, create consistent content, and promote it, I quickly realized I was stretched too thin.
And on top of that… I wasn’t getting paid.
That matters.
At The Circle City News, Attorney Mark Nicholson pays me for my work. That means I can dedicate real time and energy to writing instead of juggling a passion project that, while meaningful, just wasn’t sustainable. As much as I loved Feathers and Feet, passion alone doesn’t keep the lights on.
Another big reason for my return is familiarity — both for me and for readers. This is where I’ve done the majority of my writing. This is where most people know me from. I’ve been part of The Circle City News for a long time, and it already feels like home. Leaving that behind turned out to be much harder than I expected.
Before coming back, I also had an important conversation with Attorney Nicholson. He assured me I’d have more creative freedom moving forward. That matters to me a lot. The things I wanted to write about — feathers, feet, and the offbeat observations that make my voice my voice — I can write about them here. I don’t have to force myself into a box that doesn’t fit.
So yes, I’m back.
It’s easier. It’s familiar. I get paid. And most importantly, it allows me to focus on what I actually want to do: write.
I’m looking forward to producing good content again, telling stories, noticing the details other people overlook, and continuing to do what I’ve been doing all along — just from the place that makes the most sense.
Thanks for sticking with me. I’m excited about what’s coming next.
