Is Sexual Choking Common?

Sexual choking has become more common among young people and is not just a BDSM issue.

In a poll of 4,989 college students in the US, 58% of the women reported having been choked at least once in a sexual encounter. According to Herbenick et al.’s 2022 study of college students, 37% of the women and 7% of the men had been choked more than five times.

An increasingly common aspect of sexual assault is strangulation. Additionally, it is used against consent during previously consenting intercourse. I’ll restrict this conversation to agreeable choking, though.

Herbenick et al. (2022) examined closely the occurrence, features, and bodily reactions of sexual choking in another survey of undergraduate and graduate students. 13,449 students were given the survey, and 4,254 of them completed it. In terms of respondents, men made up 49.6%, women 48.1%, and transgender/non-binary 2.2%.

Differences in Age

According to the survey, between 30 and 40 percent of respondents had practiced choking during sex. It was discovered that younger people are more likely to choke by contrasting the reactions of older graduate students with those of younger undergraduates. 27.6% of graduates and 37.1% of undergraduates reported choking incidents, respectively. 42.1% of students and 32.1% of graduates reported having their throats constricted. Choking is therefore increasingly common among younger generations, a trend that is growing with time.

People over 40 were less likely to choke (Herbenick et al., 2023).

Differences in Gender

Additionally, there were large gender variances. Men were more likely to choke (47.4% of undergraduates and 37.7% of graduates) than women (26.7% and 16.2%, respectively). In contrast, men choked less frequently than women (25.4% undergraduates, 23.5% grads vs. 57.6% undergraduates, 41.3% graduates). Choking (45.0%) and being choked (51.5%) were considerably more common in transgender/non-binary individuals.

In conclusion, men primarily choke while women want to be choked. I’ll look into why men and women choke and are choked in a subsequent essay. The majority of the transgender and female participants in this sample have choking episodes.

  1. Thanks for the article. I’m a female, and I enjoy consensual choking. I wouldn’t jut let anyone do it but it is arousing if done with the right person and properly.
